Publisher:

NSB (National Socialist Movement)

Dating:

1941 (Sunday, September 21)

Dimensions:

approx. 91 × 60 cm

Description:

Impressive Dutch political propaganda poster from the occupation years, depicting Anton Mussert head-on in a large, high-contrast black-and-white portrait. The tight framing and dark background emphasize the face and penetrating gaze of the NSB leader, who is deliberately portrayed as a determined and authoritative figure.

Below the portrait, in large, clear letters, is the message "Mussert speaks," followed by the announcement of a public meeting on Sunday, September 21, 1941, in Roosendaal, on the Markt. The bright red text field at the bottom contrasts sharply with the darker image above and immediately catches the eye. The "admission free" underscores that this was an accessible mass meeting, intended to attract as many people as possible.

This type of poster was distributed locally, specifically in the city and surrounding area where the meeting took place. Similar posters with identical layouts were also used in other Dutch cities, each time customized with a different place name and date. They were displayed on billboards, walls, fences, and other busy spots in the streetscape.

During such speeches, Mussert typically spoke about National Socialist ideology, rejecting old party politics and class struggle, and called for support for the NSB and its vision for the future of the Netherlands within the new political order.

Condition:

Good condition. The poster has been folded and shows corresponding fold lines. Minor damage and wear consistent with age are visible in a few spots along the outer edges. These do not detract from the front or the readability. The image and text are clear and prominent.
